'Be cautious before liver transplant'
Andhra Pradesh - Hyderabad
HYDERABAD: An informed decision by patients and close relatives is the key for a successful liver transplantation surgery and subsequent recovery.
Liver transplantation on patients should be done for the right reasons and at the right time to achieve best results, says liver transplant consultant Jyotsna Verma.
“Most patients are unprepared for such a major surgery. They tend to get carried away by inadequate, unsubstantiated and often misleading information that is fed from various sources. To get the best result out of liver transplantation, it is better to look before taking the leap,” Ms. Verma said at a media interaction meet on Sunday.
Ms. Verma, who has coordinated close to 600 liver transplants, maintains that patients should be aware of the pros and cons of liver transplant. “Cost of liver transplantation is between Rs. 10 and Rs. 24 lacs in India. After transplantation, for the first six months, patients have to spend Rs. 12,000 to Rs. 15,000 per month on drugs alone. They can't afford to skip the drug doses, as it would increase the possibilities of rejection,” she said.

Ms. Verma is also providing a 24-hour helpline (+91 9711224402) service. The transplant coordinator has also launched a website (www.livertransplantconsultant.com) to provide comprehensive information on liver transplantation. “Thanks to advanced technology, success rate of liver
transplantation is close to 90 per cent. However, survival rate goes down to 80 per cent and even less after the first year of the surgery. This implies,
patients fail to take precautions after the surgery is over,” she said.
On behalf of Liver Green Foundation, she is aiming to reinvigorate organ donation movement in India by spreading awareness and dispelling myths.
